Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Joe Browning

UNCW Falls to Hampton, 60-48

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UMass transfer forward Aisha Dabo poured in a game-high 16 points, including 10 markers in a key opening quarter, to lift Hampton past UNCW, 60-48, in Coastal Athletic Association women's basketball on Friday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Pirates ended a three-game losing streak to improve to 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the CAA, winning for only the second time in the 10-game series at Trask Coliseum. It was the lone regular season meeting between the two conference foes.

The Seahawks dropped their eighth in the row and stand 5-15 and 1-8. UNCW's last home win came 28 days ago in a 69-67 verdict over Northeastern.

Dabo paced all scorers after connecting on 8-of-11 for the Pirates. Junior guard Kayla Lezama had 14 points and junior guard Kiki McElrath chipped in 11.

Graduate guard Rori Cox led the Seahawks in scoring for the seventh consecutive game with 13 points. She added 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season following a 16-point, 10-rebound effort at Towson on Jan. 11. Senior guard Mary Ferrito was the only other Seahawk in double digits with 10 points.

Donning pink uniforms to kick off awareness for breast cancer in the coming month, the Seahawks fell behind early and played catch up before the Pirates secured the win down the stretch.

Hampton entered the final quarter with a 10-point cushion and increased the lead to 51-39 on a Kiya Dorrah bucket underneath with just over four minutes left to play. A transition layup by UNCW's Kylah Silver and a triple by Ferrito shaved the deficit to 53-45 before the Pirates closed out the win.

The Pirates, playing the second of three games on the week, jumped out to a 30-20 advantage at halftime after sprinting out to a 13-point cushion. Led by Dabo, Hampton scored the final eight points of the opening period for a 21-13 edge. Dabo had the hot hand, connecting for eight of the Pirates' first 10 points, and capped the quarter with a layup to give the Pirates an early 21-13 lead.

Both teams went cold in the second quarter, however. After Hampton used a 7-0 run over a 2:53 stretch to extend the margin to 28-13, Cox helped the Seahawks get within, 28-20, before Le'Asia Foreman's layup on the left side gave the Pirates a 10-point advantage at the break. The two teams went a combined 5-for-23 from the floor in the second quarter.
