Seahawks Turn Back Pirates, 49-45

WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA – Redshirt junior Patrick Wessler's well-rounded effort of 19 points, 14 rebounds, six blocks and two steals pushed UNCW past Hampton, 49-45, in a Saturday night Coastal Athletic Association men's basketball contest at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks (14-2, 3-0) ran their win streak to four games and were the first CAA team to win three league games this year. The Pirates dropped to 2-1 in league play and an even 8-8 overall.

Wessler, who became the first NCAA Division I player this season to post a 19-14-6 stat line, also tied the program record with rejections and equaled his personal benchmark in rebounds. Senior Christian May finished three points shy of a double-double with seven points and a season-high-tying 10 rebounds.

The game of runs began from the opening tip with UNCW racing out to a 12-2 lead at the first media timeout before Hampton claimed their first lead, 14-12, with 12 unanswered at the under-12 media timeout.

May and Wessler scored nine of 10 unanswered points to reclaim the advantage for the Seahawks, 22-14, with six minutes to go and went into halftime ahead 27-18.

Hampton began the second half with a 12-2 run of its own to spark 10 minutes of five lead changes and two ties before a 9-0 run over three minutes gave UNCW a 44-37 lead at 7:05, which it would not relinquish.

The Seahawks celebrated 75 seasons of men's basketball at halftime with several former players and staffers recognized.

UNCW will play five of its next six games on the road, beginning on Thursday at Northeastern.
