Men's Soccer Victorious on Senior Night

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW sophomore Christian Acevedo netted the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to propel the Seahawks to a 1-0 men's soccer non-conference win against Mercer on Saturday's Senior Night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks upped their record to 3-3-2 before a season-high 1,407 fans, the eighth-highest single-game attendance at UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Bears fell to 2-6-2 in their first appearance in Wilmington since 2013.

Acevedo, who has scored all seven of his career goals off the bench, entered less than two minutes before his third goal of the season. The Orlando, Fla, native played a through-ball from Osei Gyamfi into the far post to break a scoreless deadlock.

UNCW has tallied double-digit shots in every game this season, including 14 tonight. The Seahawks also held Mercer to a season-low two shot attempts, the fifth time UNCW has limited an opponent to a single-digit shot total this season.

Prior to Saturday's start, the Seahawks honored four seniors – Jack Clarkson, Ethan Newsome (who also assisted Acevedo's goal), Caleb Powell and Jake Shannon – in a pregame ceremony.

UNCW next hosts top-ranked NC State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Seahawks will face off against the nation's top team for the second time this season after rallying to tie then-No. 1 Wake Forest on the road in mid-September.
