Seahawks Win CAA Opener Against Northeastern 1-0

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Ava Vaughan's penalty kick goal in the 44th minute propelled UNCW women's soccer to a 1-0 victory against Northeastern in the Coastal Athletic Association opener at Parsons Field on Thursday night.

UNCW moved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0 in CAA play, while Northeastern dipped to 1-4-3 on the season and 0-1 in the league. The Seahawks have pitched shutouts in three of their last four matches. With the victory, the Seahawks surpassed their win total from the 2024 season.

UNCW also continued its unbeaten streak on the road, moving to 4-0-1 in away matches during the 2025 campaign. The Seahawks matched their best start on the road since 2021, the year they won the CAA regular season title.

After being brought down in the penalty area in the final stages of the first half, Vaughan converted the penalty kick in the bottom right corner for her first goal of the season. Vaughan became the seventh UNCW player to net a goal during the 2025 season.

Sophomore defender Alyssa Chuderewicz preserved the Seahawks' 1-0 lead in the 78th minute with a key standing tackle and clearance from just outside the six-yard box.

Morgan Hobbs, the Seahawks goalkeeper, earned her fourth win of the season and recorded her second solo clean sheet of 2025. Hobbs made four saves in the match, including three in the first half.

UNCW tallied the first four shots of the match, all within the first eight minutes of play. The Seahawks finished the contest with a season-high 15 shot attempts, including six on goal, while holding the Huskies to just six shots total.

The Seahawks will look to sweep their first road trip of the season when they take on Monmouth in West Long Branch, New Jersey, on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m.
