WILMINGTON, N.C. – Meg Umemoto scored the first goal of her collegiate career to lead UNCW women's soccer to a 1-0 victory against Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
UNCW earned its first home win of the season and improved to 3-2-1 during the 2025 campaign while Georgia Southern fell to 2-3.
Towards the end of the fast-paced first half, Umemoto, who entered the match as a substitute in the 33rd minute, generated a powerful left-footed strike in the upper left corner to put UNCW ahead in the 37th minute. The freshman from Inagi, Tokyo, played 30 minutes as a reserve in her sixth career match.
Kayla Adams and Reese Bodas picked up their first assists as Seahawks in the victory. Bodas initiated the scoring sequence with a throw into the right side of the penalty area to Adams, who quickly dished to Umemoto at the top of the 18-yard box for the goal.
UNCW goalkeeper Morgan Hobbs played all 90 minutes and made a season-high five saves to earn her second win of the season. The redshirt junior led the defensive unit down the stretch and preserved the victory with two crucial saves in the 83rd and 90th minutes.
Seahawk defenders Alyssa Chuderewicz, Ava Chuderewicz and Macy Lutz played all 90 minutes in the victory.
Nearly 45% of UNCW's total shots were on goal. Only 36% of Georgia Southern's shots were on target, despite having a 14-9 advantage in total shots for the match.
The Seahawks will look to remain unbeaten on the road as they take on High Point (0-2-2) on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m.
