Lucas Scores First Career Goal in CAA Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW freshman Amare Lucas scored his first career goal in the 71st minute of the Seahawks' 2-1 setback to visiting Elon in both teams' Coastal Athletic Association opener on Saturday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Phoenix start the CAA slate at 1-0 and stand 1-0-1 overall. The Seahawks fell to 0-2-1 and are 0-1 in league play.

Elon struck twice in the first half to carry a 2-0 lead into the intermission. A 16th-minute score by the Phoenix's Einar Ness inside the six-yard box on an assist by Martin Kozak preluded a 38th-minute goal by Dominik Renz on helpers by Jahmir Flowers and Kozak.

UNCW registered 11 of their 16 shot attempts in the second half, highlighted by a highlight reel goal by Lucas, who buried a strike outside the 18-yard box into the back post on assists by Jack Clarkson and William Ampofo.

Both UNCW goalkeeper Trey Smiley and Elon netminder Jackson Leavitt registered six saves.

The Seahawks continue CAA play on the road next Saturday, Sept. 6, at Campbell at 7 p.m.
