GREENVILLE, N.C. – Allie Planeaux's penalty kick in the 90th minute rallied a resilient UNCW women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against East Carolina, the defending American Athletic Conference champions, at Johnson Stadium on Thursday night.
UNCW moved to 2-2-1 on the season, as the Seahawks snapped a four-match skid in the all-time series against the Pirates. East Carolina moved to 1-2-2 with the result.
The Seahawks were at disadvantage after a red card in the 76th minute, playing with only 10 players for the first time since the 2017 season.
Planeaux made one final push for UNCW and was tackled just inside the 18-yard box with 47 seconds to play, prompting an official review. The call stood, and Planeaux placed the penalty kick in the left corner for her team-leading third goal of the season.
Planeaux's goal from the penalty spot was the first time the Seahawks scored on a penalty kick since the 2023 season.
Both sides had ample scoring opportunities throughout the match, as the Seahawks held a 7-6 advantage in total shots. The teams also combined for 32 fouls in the contest, with East Carolina tallying 21.
Ayanna Parker nearly equalized in the 86th minute for UNCW, but her shot attempt from inside the penalty area hit the crossbar.
In the 64th minute, Ava Vaughan got tackled from behind inside the 18-yard box on a breakaway attempt, which also prompted an official review, but to no avail for UNCW.
Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram put East Carolina in front in the 54th minute with a strike from close range.
The Seahawks return to UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 31, to face Georgia Southern (2-2) at 1 p.m.
