CONWAY, S.C. – UNCW women's soccer powered past Coastal Carolina after an own goal by the Chanticleers in the 81st minute for a 2-1 win on Thursday night.
The Seahawks improved to 2-1 on the season, tallying the match-winning goal on an opponent's own goal after the 80th minute for the second straight match, while Coastal Carolina fell to 1-1. Before the 2025 season, the Seahawks hadn't been a recipient of an opponent's own goal since 2018.
UNCW had a few scoring chances in the first 15 minutes of the match, consistently putting the pressure on the Chanticleers' back line.
In the eighth minute, junior defender Rachel Fry lobbed a promising pass inside the box for senior midfielder Reese Bodas. However, Aris LaManna, the Chanticleers' goalkeeper, corralled the ball in the nick of time to keep the match scoreless.
Following a corner, Hailey Longwell, a redshirt sophomore forward, nearly capitalized for the Seahawks in the 41st minute, but LaManna came up with a save in traffic.
Sophomore midfielder Allie Planeaux gave the Seahawks the lead two minutes into the second half, placing the strike off her right foot in the bottom left corner for her team-leading second goal of the 2025 campaign.
The Seahawks made two crucial saves early in the second half, including an incredible sequence of three consecutive blocked shots, capped off by Fry denying a shot on the goal line to preserve the lead in the 48th minute.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Morgan Hobbs followed with a key diving save in the 57th minute. However, the Chanticleers answered shortly after with a penalty kick goal by Dolcie O'Connor in the 58th minute.
In the 59th minute, Hobbs got her glove on a Chanticleers cross, and Bodas kept the match tied by blocking the ensuing shot attempt. Hobbs picked up her first win of the season, making two saves in the victory.
With the match deadlocked down the stretch, sophomore defender Ava Chuderewicz lined up to take a corner in the 81st minute. She sent the ball in front of the net, which took a deflection off a Coastal Carolina defender in front of her twin sister Alyssa Chuderewicz, finding its way into the back of the net for the match-winning goal.
UNCW will host No. 25 Ohio State (0-1-1) on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m.
