Men's Soccer Falls in Season Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – A late goal by UMBC's Gunder Miller lifted the Retrievers over the UNCW men's soccer team 2-1 in the 2025 season opener for both teams on Thursday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

UMBC (1-0) returns to Baltimore for its home opener against Saint Peter's on Monday, while the Seahawks (0-1) travel to play Georgia Southern this Sunday.

The contest was tied through the first 42 minutes until the Retrievers' Branden Johns netted the first goal on an assist by Matteo Samori to take a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The Seahawks, before 1,098 fans, evened the game in the 66th minute on a penalty kick by senior Ethan Newsome. It marked the Myrtle Beach, S.C., native's eighth career goal and first penalty kick score.

The game appeared headed for a draw until Miller's tiebreaking score from distance pushed UMBC ahead 2-1.

UNCW outshot UMBC 20-4 with sophomore Osei Gyamfi's game-high five shots.
