GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCW women's soccer earned its first win of the 2025 season, capitalizing on an own goal by UNC Greensboro in the 82nd minute to prevail 3-2 on Sunday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
UNCW improved to 1-1 on the season, while UNCG fell to 0-2 In 2025. Both teams combined for 24 total shots, including 14 on goal in the contest.
"The team exhibited a champion's spirit with this bounce back effort," head coach Chris Neal said. "We had a challenging and disrupted week filled with different adversities. They showed how tough and together they are with this road victory. I'm very proud of the entire roster and coaching staff."
The Seahawks jumped out to a fast start when sophomore midfielder Allie Planeaux netted her first goal of the season in the ninth minute to give the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead.
Planeaux, a member of the 2024 All-Coastal Athletic Association All-Rookie Team, broke loose off a through ball and found the back of the net to record the Seahawks' first goal of the 2025 campaign.
Hailey Longwell, a member of the 2024 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team at Duquesne, picked up her first career assist as a Seahawk on the play.
In the 26th minute, freshman midfielder Lindsay Lenhard sent a lobbed ball toward the net, which UNCG goalkeeper Morgan Shively mishandled. Senior forward Ayanna Parker reacted quickly and tapped in the rebound for her first goal of the season to give UNCW a 2-0 lead.
Lenhard, who was making her first career start, was credited with the her first collegiate assist on the play.
UNCG responded with a pair of second-half goals in the 47th and 66th minutes to even the score at 2-2.
However, the Seahawks capitalized on an own goal by UNCG to regain the lead in the 82nd minute, which happened after a cross inside the 18-yard box by Parker. It was the first time since the 2018 season that the Seahawks scored off an own goal by their opponent.
In her second career match and first career start, freshman goalkeeper Zoë Anderson played all 90 minutes and made six saves to earn the first win of her collegiate career, highlighted by a crucial save from close range in the 52nd minute.
UNCW will travel to Conway, South Carolina, to battle Coastal Carolina (1-0) on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m.
