UNCW Takes Series Opener, 10-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Zane Taylor struck out 10 in a 10-0 shutout win over Stony Brook on Friday in the Coastal Athletic Association series opener at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (27-22) ran their record to 14-8 in the league and own a half-game lead over William & Mary for second place. SBU fell to 22-25 on the season and 8-14 in the CAA.

UNCW broke the game open with four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth for a 7-0 lead.

Taylor (9-2) won his ninth game of the season in the run-rule shortened game and dropped his earned run average to 2.34. He walked one and scattered three hits in going the distance for a second time this season.

Leading the way at the plate for the Seahawks were Kevin Jones with two hits, two runs scored and two knocked in and Aidan Evans belted a fifth inning three-run homer, his first of the season.

Eddie Smink (1-5) was tagged with the loss.

Eric Paulson collected a pair of singles for the Seawolves, who were held to three hits.

Stony Brook threatened in the second, getting runners on second and third with none out, but Taylor pitched out of the jam. The righthander posted a strikeout for the first out, forced a pop-up for the second and ended the inning with a strikeout looking.

The series wraps up with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
