Diamond Hawks Clinch CAA Berth

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW clinched a Coastal Athletic Association baseball championship tournament bid for the 39th consecutive season with a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who won both games by the score of 7-3, ran their record to 29-22 overall and 16-8 in the league while the Seawolves fell back to 22-27 and 8-16.

UNCW plated three runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap to break a 3-all deadlock. Bryan Arendt broke the tie with a two-out RBI double, and Aidan Evans capped the inning with a two-run single.

Arendt and Tanner Thach finished with three hits apiece, and Evans added two hits and had three runs batted in.

Aubrey Smith (2-3) earned the win for the Seahawks in relief.

James Shaffer and Eric Paulson both had two hits for SBU.

Starter Nicholas Rizzo (2-2) took the loss.

In the opener, Trace Baker earned the win in relief to improve to 4-1. Baker was the beneficiary of a six-run seventh inning as UNCW wiped out a one-run deficit. The Seahawks sent 11 batters to the plate in the stanza that included a home run by Kevin Jones, who also homered in the second game.

Brock Wills collected a game-high three hits in the opener, including a roundtripper to lead off the bottom of the first for UNCW.
