Baseball Wins CAA Series With Twinbill Sweep

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW swept a doubleheader from Monmouth on Saturday by the scores of 9-4 and 11-1 at Brooks Field to earn its fifth straight Coastal Athletic Association series win.

The Seahawks, who dropped the series opener on Friday, ran their record to 26-21 overall and 13-8 in the league. The Hawks, meanwhile, fell to 21-26 and 8-13 in the circuit.

In the nightcap, UNCW starter Cam Bagwell (8-2) allowed a run on four hits and a walk over seven innings to earn the win. He allowed just one base runner as far as second base in his final five innings.

Bryan Arendt doubled twice and homered, his fifth round tripper of the season, and knocked in three runs.

Brock Wills, Tanner Thach and Kevin Jones all had two hits for the Seahawks.

In Saturday's opener, Connor Marshburn stifled Monmouth over his six innings to improve to 4-2. Marshburn allowed four hits, walked one and recorded 10 ground ball outs.

Will led off the game for UNCW with a home run, his fourth, and Thach added homers in both the first and seventh innings. Alec DeMartino added two hits and three runs batted in.

For Monmouth, Jimmy Wigo (1-1) took the loss in relief in game one and freshman Ryan Mealy (5-1) was saddled with his first collegiate loss.

Jay Bant had the Hawks' lone multi-hit game of the day, with a pair of singles in game one.

UNCW hosts nationally-ranked NC State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Seahawks will wear special jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit ALS Research.
