Taylor Leads UNCW Past Campbell

Senior fans career-high 14 in eight shutout innings

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Zane Taylor rolled through the Campbell lineup with eight dominant innings on the mound as UNCW shutout the Camels, 6-0, on Thursday at the Coastal Athletic Association baseball tournament at Patriots Point.

Second-seeded UNCW improved to 33-22 with the win and will play nationally-ranked Northeastern at 7 p.m. on Friday. The third-seeded Camels, meanwhile, fell to 25-30 with the setback and will face the winner of Charleston and Elon at 3 p.m.

UNCW grabbed the lead with a run in the second and pushed it to 3-0 on a Bryan Arendt homer, his sixth of the season.

Taylor, who moved into a tie for second all-time at UNCW with 27 wins, recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts and dropped his earned run average to 1.98. He limited the Camels to three hits and walked one.

In the fourth inning, Campbell landed its first two hitters on second and third with none out. Taylor struck out the next batter for the first out and induced a foul pop-up to the catcher for the second out. Taylor closed out the inning with a strikeout to strand the runners in scoring position. After that jam, he retired the next 14 Camels.

Kevin Jones led UNCW with two hits, including an RBI double, and Arendt's homer made it 3-0.

Zach Sabers (2-2) took the loss for Campbell, which was held to four hits.
