Late Homer Dooms Seahawks In CAA Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jay Bant's two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning lifted Monmouth past UNCW, 2-0, in the Coastal Athletic Association series opener Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks fell two games behind second-place William & Mary in the standings with the loss. UNCW dropped to 24-21 and 11-8 in the league. The Hawks, meanwhile, improved to 21-24 and 8-11 in conference play.

Tommy Kent, who was making his first relief appearance of the season, earned the win and moved t0 3-7. In five innings, he allowed just two hits and struck out five.

Zane Taylor (8-2) suffered just his second loss of the season. Taylor surrendered Bant's homer in the eighth with two outs.

Bryan Arendt led UNCW with a pair of doubles.

Chris Andrews finished with a game-high three hits for Monmouth.

UNCW was shutout for the first time this season.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday due to anticipated inclement weather arriving on Sunday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
