Gillespie Leads UNCW Past Elon, 11-5

ELON, N.C. – Mac Gillespie drove in a career-high five runs on four hits as UNCW knocked off Elon, 11-5, on Saturday to claim the Coastal Athletic Association series at Latham Park.

With the win, the Seahawks (31-22, 18-8 CAA) claimed their seventh straight conference series win and extended their winning streak to five. The Phoenix, which needs one win or a Delaware loss to claim a tournament berth, dropped to 24-29 and 13-13 in the CAA.

Gillespie doubled in two runs in the second and two more in the third with a single. His final RBI came in the ninth to make it 10-5.

Brock Wills, who was one of four Seahawks with two hits, homered to lead off the game for the fourth time this season. He added an RBI infield single in the fifth.

Baker Cox (2-1) was credited with the win and Aubrey Smith earned the multi-inning save for his second of the season. The pair combined for 5.1 innings of one-hit, one-run relief.

Justin Mitrovich (6-4) was saddled with the loss for Elon.

Tank Yaghoubi had two hits and Kenny Mallory homered in the seventh for Elon.

The pitching staffs combined for 15 walks and seven hit batters.

The series concludes on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.
