Seahawks Clinch Bye With 7-2 Win

ELON, N.C. – Freshman Mason Hughes collected three hits and scored twice, and senior Zane Taylor tossed seven dominant innings as UNCW topped Elon, 7-2, on Thursday in the Coastal Athletic Association series opener at Latham Park.

The Seahawks clinched a first-round bye with the win and raised their record to 30-22 on the season and 17-8 in the CAA. The Phoenix, meanwhile, fell to 24-28 and remains in the hunt for a tournament berth at 13-12 in the league.

Taylor (10-2) allowed just a one-out single in the seventh on his way to earning his 10th win of the season. He struck out eight and became the sixth Seahawk to win 10 games in a season.

Tanner Thach's home run in the top of the first was the 10th of the season and his 183rd career RBI, moving him into first all-time at UNCW. He finished with two hits and two runs batted in. Alex DeMartino added two hits.

Excluding the shortened 2020 season, the Seahawks have won 30 games in each of the last 17 seasons.

Nolan Straniero (4-3) surrendered five runs, four earned, in six innings and suffered the loss.

Ryan Sprock homered for Elon to cut it to a 7-2 deficit in the ninth.

The series resumes Friday at 6 p.m.
