WILMINGTON, North Carolina -- UNCW sophomore Makayla Huddleston struck out six and Allison Corbin's sacrifice fly walked the Seahawks off for a 2-1 win in 10 innings to open the Coastal Athletic Association softball series vs. Hampton on Thursday night at Boseman Field.
Huddleston tossed a career-high nine innings in which she surrendered one run and achieved her 100th strikeout of the season to strand two on in the ninth. Freshman Lynsie Herman (6-2) worked a scoreless 10th to set up Corbin's heroic moment for the Seahawks (26-22,12-13 CAA).
Madison Biddle started the bottom of the 10th with a four-pitch walk and Morgan Britt followed with a bunt that advanced both her and Biddle into scoring position with no outs when no one covered third base. Corbin took a ball and then blooped a fly out into shallow right-center that was able to score Biddle from third.
The Pirates (15-32, 5-20 CAA) scored the game's first run in the top of the first on an RBI single off the bat of Kylie Hill.
Biddle evened the game with a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Ava Tsiouplis, who went around the tag, in the fifth off Hampton reliever Angelina Branch (8-10).
The series resumes on Friday at 4 p.m. UNCW will honor seven Seahawks – Mackenzie Amodeo, Morgan Britt, Lauren Cope, Arial Pearce, Maggie Pertee, Lauryn Richardson and Elizabeth Winstead – in a special postgame Senior Day ceremony.
