Men's Tennis Shuts Out Charleston on Senior Day

WILMINGTON, N.C UNCW men's tennis earned their sixth straight victory, shutting out College of Charleston 7-0 on Senior Day in the Coastal Athletic Association finale on Sunday afternoon at UNCW Courts.

The Seahawks honored five seniors, Harold Huens, Trey Mallory, Sam Nicholson, Juan Jose Vargas and Joseph Wayand, to cap off Alumni Weekend for the program.

UNCW moved to 9-7 on the season and 3-0 in the CAA. The Seahawks also closed the home portion of their schedule with a perfect 7-0 record, extending their home-match unbeaten streak to 13 since March 17, 2024. The Cougars dipped to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference. 

Jordi Domenech and Wayand recorded their fifth straight victory at No. 1 doubles. The pairing improved to 6-1 on the year with a 6-2 win against Mattia Bernardi and Eddie Vo.

At No. 3 doubles, Huens and Lukas Steffen won their third straight match, clinching the doubles point for UNCW with a 6-2 victory against Matias Gaedechens and Juan Diego Rojas Morea. 

Nicholson earned his ninth win of the season and sixth straight with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 2 singles against Jake Sweeney. 

Mallory cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win against Rojas Mora at No. 5 singles, extending the Seahawks' lead to 3-0.

Steffen clinched the match for UNCW, defeating Gaedechens, 6-1, 6-4 on court four. Shortly after, Domenech won his fifth straight match, taking down Jake Smith 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. 

At No. 1 singles, Huens earned the 48th win of his career with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Bernardi. Huens aims to become the 14th player in program history to reach 50 career singles victories.

Wayand closed the show with his seventh straight win, bringing his team-leading total to 11. The senior grabbed the first set against Vo 6-1. Vo responded in the second set with a 7-6 win, taking the tiebreaker 7-5. Trailing 2-1 in the 10-point winner-take-all tiebreaker, Wayand recorded nine straight points to preserve the shutout.
