ELON, North Carolina – The Elon softball team scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim Sunday's Coastal Athletic Association series finale 2-1 over visiting UNCW at Hunt Softball Park.
The Phoenix (27-17, 19-5 CAA) remained in contention for a top-two seed in the CAA Tournament. The Seahawks fell to 25-22 and 11-13 in the league in their final regular season road game of 2025.
A pitcher's duel ensued between Elon's McKenna McCard, who tossed the first five innings, and UNCW's Makayla Huddleston (13-9), who surrendered no earned runs in her complete-game effort.
A first-inning sacrifice fly by Elon's Gabi Schaal plated the first unearned run before UNCW's Maggie Pertee evened the game with a sac fly of her own in the fifth.
Elon cashed in a bases-loaded, two-out run on a fielding error in the bottom of the sixth to jump ahead as Isley Duggins (4-1) picked up the win in 1.2 relief innings and Meredith Wells recorded the final out of the game for the series win.
Freshman catcher Sierra Persinger recorded two hits and UNCW collected eight hits on Sunday.
The Seahawks next host Hampton for Senior Weekend at Boseman Field from May 1-3.
