ELON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team opened the Coastal Athletic Association series at Elon with a 9-1 five-inning setback to the Phoenix on Friday evening at Hunt Softball Park.
The Phoenix improved to 18-4 in the league and 26-16 overall. The Seahawks fell to 10-12 in CAA play and 24-21 on the season.
Elon's McKenna McCard (10-3) scattered four hits in the run-rule complete game.
UNCW's Taylor Barlow (6-7) surrendered two earned runs and struck a pair in 3.2 innings.
The Phoenix, ahead 2-0 after three innings, broke the game open with a five-run fourth and scored two more an inning later for the win. Elon was aided by two RBI games by Allee Seering and Regan Hartley.
The series resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m.
