Diamond Hawks Take Series Opener, 9-1

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Brock Wills and Tanner Thach fueled the Seahawks at the top of the order with three hits and Zane Taylor struck out seven as UNCW beat the College of Charleston, 9-1, in the Coastal Athletic Association series opener Friday at Patriots Point.

UNCW improved to 10-6 in the league and 22-19 overall with its fourth straight victory. The Cougars, meanwhile, slipped to 7-9 and 23-17.

The Seahawks struck for five runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Thach doubled in the first run to tie the game at 1-all and Bryan Arendt added an RBI infield single for the lead one batter later. Brady Thompson plated a run on a sacrifice fly and Alec DeMartino tripled in another. The final run came across on a throwing error on a dropped third strike.

Wills collected three hits in a game for the fourth time this season and Thach added three hits of his own to bring his average to .335. Mac Gillespie connected on his fourth homer of the season; a three-run shot in the eighth inning.

For the Seahawks, Taylor (8-1) went seven innings, yielded a run on three hits and a walk. He fanned seven and lowered his ERA to 2.59.

Starter Jake Brink (5-4) took the loss for the Cougars after allowing six runs, three earned, over four innings of work.

CofC was held to three hits, including a homer by Ethan Plyler.

The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.
