Seahawks Snap Stony Brook's 13-Game CAA Win Streak

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Madison Biddle and Lauryn Richardson each smashed two-run home runs, Maggie Pertee recorded two key hits and Lynsie Herman fired a complete game six-hitter as UNCW snapped Stony Brook's 13-game Coastal Athletic Association win streak with a 5-2 win in softball action on Sunday afternoon at Boseman Field.

UNCW, the No. 7 team in the CAA standings, improved to 24-20 overall and 10-11 in the league, while fourth-place Stony Brook fell to 21-20 overall and 15-6 in the conference.

Herman, a freshman, tossed her fourth complete game of the season to improve to 5-2, lowering her earned run average to 2.60. The left-hander scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs while walking three and striking out five, including four in the first two innings. She also retired eight straight hitters, starting with two outs in the top of the second inning.

Richardson, the Seahawks' third baseman, broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning. With a 3-2 count, Richardson hit her first round-tripper of the season off Seawolves' starter Crimson Rice, blasting a two-run homer inside the foul pole down the left field line on the 10th pitch of the at-bat.

UNCW tacked on another run on Pertee's two-out infield single in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring Ava Tsiouplis from second base. Seawolves' second baseman Naiah Ackerman made a diving stop to her left on Pertee's hard-hit ball as Tsiouplis raced around third, reading the play from the jump, to put the Seahawks ahead 3-0.

Later in the fourth, Pertee stole second to record her 19th stolen base of the season. Pertee's stolen base was UNCW's 132nd of the season as a team, breaking the program's single-season record of 131 in 1999. The Seahawks lead the CAA with 35 more stolen bases than second-place Charleston.

Biddle added key insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, launching her seventh home run of the season with a two-run blast off the roof in left field, tying her for fifth in the league in home runs.

Stony Brook got a pair of runs back in the top of the seventh inning. After a mound visit from head coach Ashley Wade, Herman worked out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam, getting pinch-hitter Marissa Thalassinos to fly out to left field to end the game on her 101st pitch of the afternoon.

The Seahawks travel to third-place Elon (24-15, 16-4 CAA) for a must-win CAA series beginning on Friday.
