Nelson Leads UNCW In Series-Clinching 22-0 Win

TOWSON, Md. – Cole Nelson homered twice and tripled to fuel a season-high runs for UNCW as the Seahawks blanked Towson, 22-0, to clinch the Coastal Athletic Association series on Friday at Schuerholz Field.

The Seahawks won their third consecutive conference series to improve to 8-6 in the league and 20-19 overall. The Tigers saw their records fall to 5-9 in the CAA and 13-26 on the season.

For Nelson, it was the second time this season he homered twice in a game, and he tied his career high with five runs batted in. Kevin Jones added two hits and knocked in three runs. Mac Gillespie also homered for UNCW. Kevin Novobilsky came off the bench to collect two hits and drive in three runs.

Not to be lost lost in the offensive explosion was six innings of one-hit baseball from starter Connor Marshburn (3-2), who earned the win. The righthander allowed just a double in the fourth, walked one and struck out seven.

The last time UNCW scored 20 runs in a game was in 2017 at Hofstra in a 20-7 win.

UNCW's 22-run win margin was the third most in program history.

The Seahawks plated nine runs in the fourth inning. It was the third time this season they scored nine in an inning.

Tanner Thach's single in the first inning was his 200th career hit.

The series concludes on Saturday with the Seahawks looking to earn their first conference sweep of the season. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
