UNCW Takes Series Opener From Tribe, 9-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Reliever Trace Baker delivered five shutout innings while Trevor Lucas collected three hits and drove in four runs as UNCW raced past William & Mary, 9-1, on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks even their record at 17-17 overall and 5-5 in the Coastal Athletic Association while the Tribe fell to 12-21 and 6-4.

UNCW jumped on the Tribe for five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.  Tanner Thach doubled in the first run and Lucas made it 2-0 with a RBI single one batter later. Bryan Arendt drove in the final run later in the inning.

Baker (2-1) earned the win, scattering four hits and striking out five while lowering his earned run average to a league-leading 1.83. Starter Zane Taylor went four innings before a rain delay of 1:25 ended his evening. He allowed just one hit, home run, over his workload.

Chad Yates was tagged with the loss to dip to 0-6. Four of the five runs he allowed were earned.

Thach and Brock Wills both added three hits as UNCW piled up 12 on the evening. Lucas belted his fourth homer of the season in a two-run eighth.

Charlie Iriotakis had two hits for the Tribe and Christian Rush hit his 10th round tripper of the season in the top of the fourth.

The Seahawks and Tribe return to action on Saturday with a 4 p.m. start. UNCW welcomes back members of the 1975 NAIA World Series and 2015 NCAA Regional teams and will recognize them before the game.
