UNCW Baseball Drops Series At #20 Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss broke open a tied game in the bottom of the seventh with three runs as the Golden Eagles earned a series win on Sunday with a 7-4 win over UNCW at Peter Taylor Park.

USM, which is ranked as high as 20th, raised its record to 11-5 overall and 9-2 at home. UNCW fell to 8-8 with its second straight loss.

In the seventh, USM strung together four straight hits, including a pair of doubles, to open the inning against losing pitcher Mason Murdock (0-1), who allowed three runs.

Colby Allen notched his third save of the season.

Kevin Jones finished with three hits for the Seahawks while Tanner Thach chipped in two. Trevor Lucas knocked in two runs.

USM's Davis Gillespie doubled, homered and finished with three runs batted in while Jake Cook had three hits, including a double and a triple.

Reliever Brooks Willoughby (1-0) was credited with the win, striking out three of the four batters he faced.

UNCW starter Cam Bagwell didn't figure in the decision. The freshman allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits over six innings. He finished with five strikeouts.

UNCW opens a four-game home stand on Mar. 11 when it hosts North Carolina at 6 p.m.
