UNCW Takes Series Opener From #20 Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Trace Baker pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning to hold off nationally-ranked Southern Miss on Friday in a series-opening 6-3 win at Pete Taylor Field.

The Seahawks (8-6) picked up their first road win of the and second against a ranked opponent. The 20th-ranked Golden Eagles (9-5), meanwhile, dropped their second home game this season.

With Southern Miss leading 1-0, the Seahawks grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the third. Bromley Thornton, who pushed his hitting streak to six games, led off the inning with his first homer of the season and Kevin Jones tripled in the second run. Tanner Thach plated the final run with a ground ball to second.

Zane Taylor (4-0) earned the win, going 5.2 innings. He walked one and struck out six. Baker, who closed out the game with 3.1 innings, notched his third save in as many opportunities.

JB Middleton (2-1) was tagged with the loss for USM. The right-hander surrendered five runs over five innings.

Thach finished with two hits and knocked in two runs while Trevor Lucas added a pair of hits. Alec DeMartino belted his third homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth, for a 5-1 lead.

Jake Cook collected three hits for the Golden Eagles. Seth Smith and Joey Urban both had two hits.

The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. EST. The game was moved up due to expected inclement weather later in the day.
