Softball Routs Monmouth, 16-2

WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – The UNCW softball team matched a season-high of 16 hits to complete a Coastal Athletic Association sweep at Monmouth with a 16-2 run-rule rout on a misty Sunday afternoon at the MU Softball Park.

The Seahawks (21-12, 7-5 CAA) have now won at least six straight games for the second time this season with their second CAA weekend sweep in a row. The Hawks stand 9-26 and 5-7 in the league.

UNCW's Madison Biddle rocketed her first career grand slam and sixth home run of the season to highlight her career-high-tying 5 RBI day. Morgan Britt (3), Taylor Barlow (2) and Allison Corbin (2) each drove in multiple runs.

Top-of-the-order hitters Cassidy Relay and Maggie Pertee each registered two hits and scored four runs apiece.

Five of UNCW's 16 hits went for extra bases including a double by pinch-hitter Madyson Cromer and triples off the bats of Britt, Relay and freshman Addi Yates, along with Biddle's no-doubter in the fourth inning to cap the explosive day.

The Seahawks scored at least four runs in three innings, including five runs in the second and fourth innings for the most runs scored in a single game since UNCW plated 17 runs on Mar. 10, 2007, vs. North Carolina A&T.

Sophomore righty Makayla Huddleston (11-5) followed up Friday's no-hitter with three hitless innings to start Sunday's contest. The Kent, Ohio, product has allowed one hit and no runs over her last three starts (13 innings), all wins.

Monmouth's Jayla Cadena (6-9) took the loss.

The Seahawks host nationally-ranked Duke for a Wednesday afternoon contest at 5 p.m.
