Baseball Edged In 16 Innings By Aggies, 4-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. – North Carolina A&T plated two runs in the top of the 16th inning to knock off UNCW, 4-3, in a marathon Coastal Athletic Association game on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Aggies clinched the conference series to improve to 4-1 in the league and 8-16 overall. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped back to 1-4 and 13-14.

Eight Aggies made their way to the plate in the final inning. Tyler Smith, who had three hits in the game, opened the inning with a double and scored one batter later on a throwing error. Nigel Robinson plated the eventual winning run with a bases-loaded single with two outs later in the frame.

Cole Nelson led off the Seahawk bottom of the 16th with a home run and the Seahawks loaded the bases with two out but failed to tie the score.

Tanner Thach and Alec DeMartino both had two hits for the Seahawks.

Reliever Darius Robinson (2-0) was credited with the win and Braxton Davis notched his first career save.

Bromley Thornton (0-1) took the loss in relief, facing three batters in the top of the 16th inning.

UNCW starter Zane Taylor allowed two hits and struck out six over six shutout innings. Trace Baker fanned seven in his 5.1 innings out of the bullpen.

NCAT reliever Jacob Halford allowed one hit over six shutout innings.

The 16 innings were tied for the second-longest game in Seahawk history, and it was the program's first game to last more than five hours, finishing in 5:09.

Both teams combined to go 3-28 with runners in scoring position.

The final game of the series is Sunday at 2 p.m.
