WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW men's tennis posted their fourth straight victory, outlasting Drexel, 5-2, to remain unbeaten in Coastal Athletic Association play on Friday at UNCW Courts.
The Seahawks moved to 7-7 on the season and 2-0 in the CAA, while Drexel fell to 8-4 and 1-2 in the conference. UNCW also remained perfect in home matches, improving to 5-0.
The Seahawks held a slim 3-2 lead late in the match, but seniors Trey Mallory and Sam Nicholson solidified the UNCW victory with a pair of gutsy come-from-behind victories in the third set of their respective matches. Both of their matches went over the two-hour mark.
"Very proud of how we had a number of guys step up," head coach Mait DuBois said. "We had some sickness go through our team this past week and had to play down a couple of players. I'm really proud of how our guys responded against a very tough Drexel team. This kind of match will help us down the stretch. We named Trey player of the match, coming up with a big three-set clincher."
Alexander Thompson and Joseph Wayand teamed up for the first time, defeating Josue Guzman and Antonio Leon in No. 3 doubles, 6-1, to begin doubles play.
Drexel responded with two victories to claim the doubles point with a 7-3 tiebreak victory in no. 1 doubles.Â
Harold Huens, the reigning CAA Player of the Year, breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Alex De Sousa in No. 1 singles to even the match at one apiece.Â
Alex de Gabriele picked up his third victory, putting UNCW in front, 3-1, with his first win in No. 5 singles against Roman Lafond, 6-1, 6-4.
Sophomore Jordi Domenech stepped into the No. 4 slot for the first time this season, earning a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory against Egor Kirakosov for his third win.Â
After Drexel pulled within one in No. 6 singles, Mallory clinched the match for UNCW with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, comeback win against Will Burridge in a grueling battle. Mallory, playing in No. 3 singles for the first time this season, earned his second victory for the Seahawks in 2025.
In No. 2 singles, Nicholson improved to 7-5 on the season, rallying for his fourth straight victory to defeat Hussein El Tawil, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in two and half hours of thrilling action.
