Baseball Drops Opener To NC A&T, 5-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. – North Carolina A&T starter Angel Ortiz pitched a gem as the righthander allowed three runs on five hits over eight innings helping the Aggie knocked off UNCW, 5-3, in the Coastal Athletic Association series opener on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Aggies, who picked up their first road win of the season, improved to 7-16 overall and 3-1 in the CAA. UNCW, meanwhile, again drops to .500 at 13-13 and 1-3 in the league.

With the game tied at 3-all through four innings, the Aggies struck for two runs in the top of the fifth against losing pitcher Connor Marshburn (1-2). Wyche singled to open the inning and moved around to third base on a double through the left side by Smith one batter later. Taylor plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and Jones made it a two-run lead, 5-3, with a single.

Ortiz ran his record to 4-2 with the solid outing. He walked one and struck out four.

Jacob Halford earned the save, his first of the season, with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Marshburn went 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks.

Tanner Thach had two hits for the Seahawks, including his fourth homer of the season. It came in the bottom of the third, a two-run shot, and knotted the game at 3-all.

The series continues Saturday at 4 p.m.
