Thompson Shines In 5-3 Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Brady Thompson collected three hits and UNCW turned four double plays as the Seahawks topped visiting Charleston Southern, 5-3, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday at Brooks Field.

UNCW moved above .500 at 13-12 with the win while the Buccaneers dropped their seventh straight to drop to 12-10.

Martin Zelenka gave UNCW a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single and the second run scampered across on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead the Seahawks would not surrender.

Thompson, a freshman, led the Seahawk lineup with his three hits and he drove in a run. Tanner Thach added two hits.

Trace Baker (1-1) was credited with the win following two shutout innings of relief.

Cyle Phelan notched the save, his second of the season.

CSU starter Brett Gastman (0-1) took the loss.

Kaden Smith belted his third homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the seventh to narrow CSU's deficit to 4-3.

UNCW was hit by a season-high and program-record tying six times.

The Seahawks return to Coastal Athletic Association play this Friday when they open a three-game series against North Carolina A&T at home with a 6 p.m. start.
