WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW women's tennis earned their second straight Coastal Athletic Association victory, defeating Campbell 4-3 in a three-and-a-half-hour battle at UNCW Courts on Sunday afternoon.
UNCW moved to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the CAA. The Fighting Camels dropped to 7-7 and 2-2 in the conference. Five of the six singles matches lasted at least 90 minutes, with three moving well past the two-hour mark.
The Seahawks started the match strong, claiming the doubles point quickly. In No. 1 doubles, Eda Arli and Elif Albayrak blanked Mollie Garcia and Ofer Kivity, capturing a 6-0 win in 22 minutes. A few minutes later, Lucia Gomez and Anna Parker Shumate clinched the point with a 6-1 victory in No. 3 doubles against Jessica Maras and Veronika Prospalova.Â
"Yesterday after the match against Towson, our team decided that we wanted to improve the energy in doubles and we did that really well," head coach Hans Olsen said. "The energy went right to our footwork and we moved really well on the doubles court today. All 10 players were an important piece of this big win today."
Stela Joksimovic earned her fourth straight victory in No. 2 singles, breezing past Garcia 6-2, 6-1, extending the Seahawks lead to 2-0.
Shortly after, Arli recorded her second straight win in No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Sonia Pieczynska to give UNCW a three-point cushion.
Campbell bounced back to claim the next two singles matches to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Gomez gave UNCW the match victory in No. 3 singles, prevailing in a two-hour, 21-minute slugfest against Kivity 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Gomez improved to 6-3 on the season, recording her second consecutive win.
