Diamond Hawks Drop CAA Opener At Campbell, 3-2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell starter Jake Murray struck out a career-high 12 over six shutout innings as the Camels posted a 3-2 win over UNCW on Friday in the Coastal Athletic Association opener for both programs at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Camels upped their record to 9-12 with the home win while the Seahawks, who are now 1-6 on the road, saw their record slide to 11-11.

In the Campbell third inning, Jeff Music doubled with one out and Darnell Parker followed with a double of his own to plate the first run. Dalen Thompson jumped on the first pitch he saw, one batter later, for a two-run homer to left and it was 3-0 Camels.

Alec DeMartino supplied the lone offense for UNCW with a two-run homer in the eighth.

Murray (2-2), who missed the 2024 season with an injury, struck out a career-high 12 over six innings of work. Murray held the Seahawks hitless over the first five innings before a leadoff single by Thach in the sixth.

Bryce Shares earned his second save of the season, pitching the ninth.

Zane Taylor (5-1) suffered the loss, his first of the season. The righthander walked a season-high two and struck out five in a season-low four innings.

Seahawk batters struck out a season-high 17 times.

Game two of the conference series is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
