Diamond Hawks Claim Series Win Over Flames

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW earned a series win on Sunday behind a strong start from freshman Cam Bagwell as the Seahawks dumped Liberty, 5-3, at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 7-5 with the home win while the Flames dropped to 7-4.

Leading 2-1 in the fourth inning, UNCW pushed its lead to 4-1 on a ground ball out by Mac Gillespie and a safety squeeze by Bryan Arendt. Martin Zelenka, who finished with two hits, made it 5-1 with a RBI single in the fifth.

Alec DeMartino and Bromley Thornton also added two hits apiece.

Bagwell (2-0) pitched through a slow start to retire 12 straight Flames from the third to the seventh innings. He allowed a pair of runs on four hits, walked three and struck out two. Trace Baker closed out the final two innings for his second save of the weekend and season.

Josh Swink (2-1) was tagged with the loss for Liberty. Reliever Josh Webb struck out six and retired all 10 batters he faced.

The Flames were limited to four hits in the game.

UNCW returns to action on Mar. 5 at Louisiana for a 7 p.m. EST.
