Series Win For Diamond Hawks

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW's Martin Zelenka's two-run single in the fifth inning gave the Seahawks the lead and relievers Cooper Allen and Cyle Phelan closed out the game as UNCW earned a series win over in-state rival Charlotte with a 6-4 win on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks moved back to .500 at 10-10 while the 49ers, who won the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, also saw their record evened at 9-9.

Zelenka, who also had a go-ahead homer in the series opener on Friday, delivered a two-out single to score two runs in the fifth as UNCW jumped in front, 5-4.

Allen and Phelan combined for four innings of relief. Both fanned four and Phelan notched his first save of the season.

Cam Bagwell earned the win to improve to 3-0.

Brady Thompson was joined by Tanner Thach and Alec DeMartino with two-hit games.

Ed Wagner was saddled with the loss as his record went to 1-1.

Dawson Bryce and Noah Furcht collected two hits apiece for the 49ers.

In the opener, a four-run seventh inning lifted Charlotte to a 5-2 win to even the series. Wesley Jones (1-0) earned the win and Joseph Taylor nailed down the save, his third of the season.

Trevor Lucas held game-high honors with three hits in the loss for UNCW.

The Seahawks visit Fayetteville, N.C., next on March 18 for a non-conference tilt with East Carolina. The game will be played at Segra Stadium with first-pitch set for 6 p.m.
