UNCW Scores 11 Unanswered To Win Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW's Martin Zelenka homered and drove in four runs while Bryan Arendt collected three hits as UNCW scored 11 unanswered to upend visiting Charlotte, 11-4, on Friday at Brooks Field.

Both teams moved to .500 on the season with the Seahawks, who halted a modest three-game losing skid, going to 9-9 and the 49ers dropping to 8-8.

UNCW pushed six runs across in the fifth inning to erase a 4-0 deficit and take the lead. Arendt, who finished with two stolen bases, opened the inning with a single as the Seahawks strung together four hits off losing pitcher Blake Gillespie (1-3). Kevin Jones doubled in the first run and two more came in on a triple by Tanner Thach. The big blow of the inning was a three-run homer to left-center by Zelenka.

Zane Taylor (5-0) earned his fifth win of the season, going five innings.

Jones, Thach, Zelenka and Alec DeMarinto all finished with two hits.

The Seahawks bullpen of Aubrey Smith, Ty Lawson and Connor Kane combined for four innings of shutout baseball.

Chandler Riley had two hits for Charlotte and Carson Bayne and Connor Maryniak both homered.

The series continues Saturday with a 4 p.m. start.
