Offense Powers Seahawks to Sunday Win vs. Queens

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team matched a season-high with 11 hits, including three each by sophomore Madison Biddle and Averie Daughtry, to power past Queens (N.C.), 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks concluded the first weekend of the season at 3-2 while the Royals dipped to 1-2 on the young season.

Daughtry was one of two Seahawks to drive in a pair of runs along with sixth-year Morgan Britt, who plated two on a pair of sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth innings.

Daughtry's first RBI came on a second-inning double to score Ava Tsiouplis, extending UNCW's lead to 2-0 after freshman Sierra Persinger put UNCW on the board with a first-inning RBI single.

Two innings later, the Princeton, N.C., native started a three-run fourth inning with a single to left field that was followed by Britt's first sac-fly along and an unearned run to make it 6-0.

Tsiouplis pushed her hitting streak to three games with an RBI double down the left-field line in the fifth and Britt pushed the lead to 7-0 with another sac-fly to deep center.

All four Seahawk pitchers combined to limit Queens to one run on five hits and struck out eight with sophomore Makayla Huddleston (2-1) earning the win in two scoreless innings of relief.

The Royals' Taylor Jones (0-1) took the loss in two innings in which she allowed two runs.

The Seahawks hit the road for the first time next weekend when they play five games at a Charleston Southern tournament, including three neutral games vs. Central Connecticut State.
