Softball Records 19 Hits in Two-Win Friday

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Home runs by Madison Biddle and Allison Corbin powered the UNCW softball team to a two-game sweep over Central Connecticut State and host Charleston Southern at the CSU Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks (5-2) defeated the Blue Devils (0-1) in the weekend opener 7-0 before holding off a late rally by the Buccaneers (5-2) in the second game to win 6-4.

UNCW combined for 19 hits, six of which for extra bases, in the two-win Friday.

Another twinbill awaits the Seahawks on Saturday against the two teams beginning with CCSU at Noon.

GAME 1 | UNCW 7, Central Connecticut State 0
UNCW's Makayla Huddleston (3-1) tossed six scoreless innings and retired 22 of the 23 batters faced to earn her third win of the season.

The Seahawks raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning highlighted by a pair of doubles by Sierra Persinger and Ava Tsiouplis.

Biddle and freshman Addi Yates added runs in the second and third innings, respectively, with a sacrifice fly (Biddle) and triple (Yates).

Corbin put the exclamation on UNCW's nine-hit day with a two-run shot, her first of the season, to left-center to score lead-off speedster Cassidy Relay, who scored two runs along with two hits.

The Blue Devils' Adrianna Gre (0-1) took the loss in three innings of work.

GAME 2 | UNCW 6, Charleston Southern 4
Biddle's three-hit, 3-RBI game proved the difference in a tightly contested game that came down to the final out.

The sophomore infielder launched her team-high third home run of the season over the left field wall to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then was the sparkplug of a three-run third with a two-run single.

Corbin pushed the lead to 4-0 in the same inning to score Biddle, which was vital with Charleston Southern adding three runs of their own in the bottom frame on run-scoring situations by Blakely Kingsmore and Casten Sandvig.

Corbin added her second RBI in the top of the sixth that also included Persinger's second double of the day and first of the game to make it 6-3.

After scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Bucs threatened with the bases loaded in the seventh inning but reliever Peyton Eckert (S, 1) slammed the door shut with a harmless popout to center field to earn UNCW its third straight win.

Taylor Barlow (2-0) tossed 6.1 innings with three earned runs for the win while Charleston Southern starter Riley Lauffer (0-1) took the loss.

Yates reached base four times with a pair of hits and two walks.
