Diamond Hawks Power Past Flames, 6-3

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Tanner Thach collected three hits, including his second home run of the season, and Zane Taylor struck out eight as UNCW pushed past visiting Liberty, 6-4, on Friday in the series opener at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks upped their record to 6-4 on the season while the Flames dipped to 6-3.

UNCW jumped in front early with three runs in the bottom of the first. Trevor Lucas opened the scoring with an RBI single and Bromley Thornton doubled in a run. Ryker Galaska capped the outburst with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.

Thach scored twice and drove in two runs and was joined by Lucas in the power department as the sophomore belted his first homer of the season. Both round-trippers came in the third inning and lifted UNCW to a 5-0 lead.

Taylor allowed five hits and did not walk a batter in running his record to 3-0.

Tanner Marsh paced the Flames with two hits.

Starter Dylan Mathiesen (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs in three innings of work.

Trace Baker retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to notch his first career save.

The middle game of the series is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
