BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – The UNCW men's basketball team rattled off a 17-4 run to start the game and never looked back in its 79-60 victory over Campbell in Coastal Athletic Association action on Thursday night at Gore Arena.
The Seahawks (23-7, 13-4 CAA) secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CAA Men's Basketball Championship in Washington, D.C. The Camels (15-15, 10-7 CAA) conclude their regular season at Charleston on Saturday.
UNCW's Khamari McGriff and Harlan Obioha combined for 32 points on 15-of-19 shooting in the win. Donovan Newby paced the Seahawks, who shot 58.0 percent (season-high vs. a Division I opponent), with 17 markers.
Campbell's Caleb Duggan contributed a game-high 19 points and Nolan Dorsey added 12 in the loss.
The Seahawks jumped out of the gate, draining five of their first eight shots, to build a double-digit lead just under five minutes into the game. The run featured 12 unanswered points that flipped a 5-4 game into a 17-4 advantage at the 15:26 mark in the first half.
The Seahawks shot 50 percent and led by as many as 20 points, 34-14, in a first half that ended with a 38-28 advantage after the Camels closed the half with a 9-0 spurt.
Campbell pulled within eight in the second half but the Seahawks pushed it back to 15 points, 55-40 with 13:08 to go, with seven straight points.
UNCW closes out its regular season on Saturday vs. Delaware at 7 p.m.
