Softball Drops 7-5 Decision at East Carolina

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – East Carolina's four-run third inning powered a 7-5 win over UNCW in non-conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Joyner Family Stadium.

The Pirates improved to 8-5 and will play NC Central later Wednesday. The Seahawks stand 12-3 after their program-record-tying 10-game win streak was halted.

ECU struck for four solo home runs in the decisive third inning with round-trippers coming off the bats of Megan Johnson, Anne Sawyer, Logan Sutton and Hailey Massaro in a span of six batters.

The game was tied 2-all after the first inning as both teams cashed in multiple walks for a pair of runs.

The Seahawks brought two home in the first on a two-out, bases-loaded RBI single by Ava Tsiouplis while Sawyer singled home a run and Sutton followed with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to even the game at 2-2.

UNCW's Morgan Britt extended her hit streak to a career-long nine games with a two-run triple in the fifth that cut the deficit to 7-5 after Maggie Pertee plated an unearned run on a single to start the three-run inning.

ECU's Taylor Apple (4-2) earned the win while UNCW's Lynsie Herman (2-1) took the loss.

UNCW travels to Raleigh this weekend for a round-robin tournament hosted by NC State that also includes Michigan and Queens (N.C.) from Feb. 28- Mar. 2.
