WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team extended its season-long win streak to nine games with a pair of victories over DePaul and UMass on Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field.
The Seahawks (11-2) are one win away from tying the program record for consecutive wins after beating the Blue Demons (6-6) 6-1 followed by a 4-2 victory over the Minutewomen (5-9).
UNCW closes the weekend and goes for its 10th straight win on Sunday vs. Rider at 11:30 a.m.
GAME 1 | UNCW 6, DePaul 1
UNCW's Makayla Huddleston (6-1) ran her scoreless inning streak to 30 innings, including five on Saturday, before being charged DePaul's lone run in the sixth inning.
Senior Arial Pearce collected three RBI and scored a pair of runs in her two-hit day. Fellow senior Maggie Pertee also fashioned a pair of hits and drove in a run.
Pearce started a two-run first inning with a single up the middle and then doubled the lead with a two-run single in the third. The former All-CAA performer came around to score on a passed ball in the inning.
Pertee erased the Blue Demons' sixth-inning run with an RBI in the bottom of the frame.
DePaul's Kelly Greene (3-4) surrendered five runs, one earned, across three innings in the loss.
GAME 2 | UNCW 4, UMass 2
Peyton Eckert's (1-1) career-high seven strikeouts bested UMass's Natalee Horton (1-6) in a pitcher's duel on Saturday evening that was scoreless through five-and-a-half innings.
UNCW loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and broke through on an Averie Daughtry pinch-hit sacrifice fly.
The Seahawks again loaded the bases an inning later and scored another run as Morgan Britt, who extended her hitting streak to seven games, worked a full-count walk. One batter later, Lauryn Richardson singled home two more insurance runs that proved vital.
The Minutewomen brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh but heads-up defense by UNCW caught a UMass runner in a run down between second and third that Richardson tagged out for the final out of the game.
