WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Strong performances in the circle by UNCW's Makayla Huddleston and Taylor Barlow keyed a two-win Friday over UMass and DePaul at Boseman Field that pushed the Seahawks' win-streak to seven games.
The Seahawks (9-2) blanked the Minutewomen (4-8) 5-0 in the UNCW opener and moved past the Blue Demons (5-5) 5-2 late with a three-RBI day by junior Grace Hennessy.
UNCW continues the weekend with back-to-back games vs. DePaul and UMass starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
GAME 1 | UNCW 5, UMass 0
Huddleston was sensational, lowering her ERA to 0.72 with another scoreless performance, this time a complete three-hitter to start the weekend. The reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week faced six batters above the minimum.
Three Seahawks fashioned multi-hit games: Cassidy Relay, Madison Biddle and Maggie Pertee.
Pertee started the scoring with a little league home run in the second inning. The senior shortstop laced a triple to the right-center gap and took home on an errant throw to third.
Biddle and Allison Corbin produced RBI singles in the third and the Seahawks added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth to complete the victory.
GAME 2 | UNCW 5, DePaul 2
Hennessy enjoyed a career day with three hits and three RBI to push UNCW past DePaul in the Friday nightcap.
Corbin and Pertee both posted multi-hit days and Sierra Persinger's deep sacrifice fly in the fifth put UNCW ahead after the Blue Demons evened the game at 2-2 in the top half of the inning.
Hennessy's RBI double in the second inning capped a two-run frame that included an RBI single by Morgan Britt. The junior infielder then singled home two insurance runs in the fifth.
UNCW's Taylor Barlow (3-0) limited DePaul to two runs over five innings with three strikeouts.
The Blue Demons' Bella Nigey (2-1) took the loss in 2.1 relief innings.
