Diamond Hawks Power Past Bobcats, 12-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Senior Zane Taylor tied his career-high of nine strikeouts while Brock Wills collected three hits as UNCW powered past visiting Quinnipiac, 12-1, on Friday at Brooks Field in its season opener.

The Seahawks captured their sixth straight opening day victory while Quinnipiac dropped to 0-2 with the run-rule shorted loss.

Taylor (1-0) held the Bobcats to a run on three hits over a career-long 7.2 innings. Taylor collected seven of those strikeouts over the final 4.2 innings.

Wills scored twice and doubled twice while Tanner Thach had two hits and drove in three runs on a second-inning homer. Bryan Arendt, Mac Gillespie and Alec DeMartino all had two hits.

Nick Balcom (0-1) took the loss for QU, allowing five runs, two earned, over five innings of work.

Sebastian Mueller connected on his first homer of the season in the fourth inning.

UNCW used the big inning with a five-run second, a three-run sixth and closed out the game with four runs in the eighth.

The schedule for this weekend's action at Brooks Field has been adjusted due to expected rain on Sunday. Quinnipiac and Georgia will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday and the Seahawks and Georgia will play 45 minutes following that game. The third and final game of the day will be Quinnipiac and UNCW and also will start 45 minutes following the middle game.
