Women's Basketball Held Off By Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop earned a 78-68 win over visiting UNCW as the Eagles held off the Seahawks late on Sunday at the Winthrop Coliseum in women's college basketball action.

The Eagles stayed perfect at home (5-0) with the win and to 7-4 overall. The Seahawks dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-4 on the road. The loss also snapped a four-game winning streak for UNCW in the series.

A layup by Icyss Storm moved the Seahawks to within three, 63-60, but the Eagles closed out the win by limiting UNCW to one field goal over the final 3:54.

Storm scored all 10 of her points in the second half to join Kylah Silver (18), Rori Cox (12) and Agelina Pelayo (10) in double digits.

Winthrop landed three in double figures with Madison Ruff, Mya Pierfax and Amourie Porter each scoring point points.

Tocari Johnson of Winthrop grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

With 31 attempts from the foul line, UNCW posted its third game with 30-plus trips to the charity stripe.

After Mary Ferrito knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 27-all, Winthrop used a 10-2 run to end the half and carry a 37-29 lead into intermission.

The Seahawks next visit North Carolina on Dec. 17 for an 8 p.m. start at Carmichael Arena.
