Seahawks Finish Tournament Sweep With 88-62 Win Over Bulldogs

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's basketball team used its trademark balanced scoring attack to race past Gardner-Webb, 88-62, in the finale of the Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic early Saturday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks reeled off their sixth straight victory and climbed to 7-1 in the new season, including a perfect 6-0 at home. The Runnin' Bulldogs, making their first appearance in Wilmington, remain winless at 0-9.

UNCW swept its three games in the MTE event, averaging 81.7 points per game, while limiting opponents to 58.7 points each contest. The Seahawks shot 50.8 percent from the field over the three contests this week and held opponents to .361.

The Seahawks set a tournament record with 88 points after placing six men in double figures in Friday's rout of Navy and five more in double digits on Saturday.

Senior guard Nolan Hodge led the way with 16 points, followed by senior guard Madison Durr with 14, junior forward Patrick Wessler and senior guard Noah Ross with 12 each and junior forward Gavin Walsh with 11. Senior guard Christian May added a season-high 10 rebounds and Durr dished out six assists.

Redshirt freshman guard Spence Sims was high man for the Runnin' Bulldogs with 19 points. Curtis Williams II added 14 points for Gardner-Webb, which shot 36.2 percent from the floor.

Battling Head Coach Takayo Siddle's alma mater, the Seahawks jumped out to a big margin midway through the first half and coasted down the stretch.

The Runnin' Bulldogs drained their first four field goal tries to build an early lead before the Seahawks got rolling. After Ace Talbert's triple on the right wing staked Gardner-Webb to a 13-9 edge, the Seahawks brought the game even at 18-all on May's three-pointer in the left corner with just under 13 minutes remaining in the opening frame.

UNCW then used a suffocating 20-3 run over 6:31 to break away en route to a 48-30 cushion at the break. A pair of free throws by Greedy Williams with 10 ticks on the clock gave the Seahawks, who shot 50 percent in the first 20 minutes, a comfortable cushion at halftime.

The lead remained at 17 points before Gardner-Webb chipped away and narrowed the deficit to 52-40 on a runner by Jamias Ferere at 15:14.

But Hodge answered with a trifecta from the top of the key. The lead ballooned to 28 points on three occasions as the Seahawks poured it on down the stretch. Reserve forward Makoi Mabor Makoi's turnaround jumper on the right wing extended the lead to 88-60 with just over one minute left on the clock.

GAME NOTES: The Seahawks improved to 5-1 in the two years of the tournament and have won five straight in the event…UNCW and Gardner-Webb have now split a pair of games in the series…There was only one lead change…With six assists, Durr went over 300 dimes for his collegiate career…Walsh snagged six rebounds to reach 500 boards in his career…The Seahawks committed just seven turnovers…The two teams combined for 24 three-pointers .... UNCW went 6-1 in November for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
