Seahawks Close Regular Season at Charleston

No. 3 seed UNCW Opens CAA South Division Tournament at No. 2 seed Campbell on Thursday

MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – A late Charleston goal spoiled UNCW men's soccer's regular season finale with a 2-1 Seahawk setback on Saturday night at Patriots Point.

The Seahawks (5-8-2, 4-4 CAA) will be the South Division's No. 3 seed in the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament after earning a postseason berth earlier this week and will travel to play No. 2 seed Campbell on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Cougars end their season at 6-9-3 (3-3-2 CAA).

Charleston's Ezequiel Emanuele Goetzke delivered the game-winner in the 86th minute on an assisted short goal off his right foot after UNCW's Jake Shannon tied the game roughly 20 minutes earlier.

Shannon evened the game on a fast-thinking free kick goal to erase a Charleston 1-0 lead, thanks to a first-half score by Matt Lenert.

After a Cougar's 65th-minute foul set up a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, Shannon quickly lined up his shot and found the back of the net against an unset Charleston defense.

It represented Shannon's career-high third goal of the season. The Apex, N.C., native has played all but one minute in his four-year college career and completed his third season playing all 90 minutes in every regular-season contest.

UNCW, who reached the CAA Finals one year ago, will make its league-record 29th CAA Tournament appearance next week. The UNCW-Campbell winner will advance to play at South Division No. 1 seed Elon next Sunday to determine the division's representative in the CAA Championship Game on Nov. 15.
