WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sophomore defender Ava Chuderewicz scored off a free kick in the 85th minute to lift UNCW women's soccer to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory against Stony Brook in an instant classic between Coastal Athletic Association division leaders on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks stretched their unbeaten streak to eight matches, improving their overall record to 11-3-2.Â
UNCW, the 2025 CAA South Division Champions, moved to 7-0-1 in CAA play with a league-high 22 points. The Seahawks will finish the regular season with the most points in the Coastal Athletic Association.
With the loss, Stony Brook fell to 10-5-2 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
Chuderewicz scored her second goal of the season, netting the match-winner over the Seawolves' goalkeeper on a left-footed free kick from near the Seahawks' bench area.
After UNCW fell behind 3-2, in the 57th minute, freshman midfielder Meg Umemoto equalized for the Seahawks in the 72nd minute with her second goal of the year, a right-footed penalty kick in the lower-left corner.
Freshman midfielder Lindsay Lenhard knotted the score at 2-2 in the 41st minute with her second goal of the year. Lenhard placed a left-footed strike in the lower-right corner off a feed from Rachel Fry.
Redshirt sophomore forward Hailey Longwell scored her seventh goal of the season, striking first for the Seahawks in the first 45 seconds with a bicycle kick from inside the six-yard box off a header from Alyssa Chuderewicz.
Longwell continued her points streak, tallying at least one point for the sixth straight match. Longwell leads the Seahawks with 17 points and seven goals. Longwell currently leads all players in the CAA with 14 points and six goals during conference play.
Stony Brook tied the match in the ninth minute on Reilly Rich's 13th goal of the season. The Seawolves would grab their first lead of the day in the 29th minute on a free kick from Abigail Roche.Â
After Lenhard's equalizer made it 2-2, Linn Beck provided the go-ahead goal for Stony Brook with a header in the 57th minute.Â
The Seahawks stormed back with the two aforementioned goals late in the second half from Umemoto and Chuderewicz to steal the victory and three key points. The Seahawks have tallied at least four goals in a match in three of their last four contests.
Stony Brook had a slight 13-12 edge in total shots, while each team had seven shots on target. Morgan Hobbs, the redshirt junior goalkeeper for the Seahawks, made four saves in the victory and earned her 10th win of the season.Â
UNCW will wrap up the regular season on the road against Campbell (4-7-4, 2-4-2 CAA)Â on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.Â
