UNCW Surges Past Campbell, 3-2

Box Score WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Ethan Newsome's game-winning goal in the 87th minute capped a three-goal second half, fueled by Christian Acevedo's first career brace, to propel the UNCW men's soccer team over Campbell 3-2 in its home finale on Saturday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 3-3 in Coastal Athletic Association play and stand 4-6-2 overall ahead of a three-game road swing to conclude the regular season. The Fighting Camels fell to 3-1-2 in the league and are 7-4-4 overall.

Acevedo tied the game in a span of five minutes, roughly seven minutes after Campbell's Marco Wright completed his own two-goal effort in the 51st minute after giving the Camels a 1-0 lead early in the first half. The reserve sophomore was aided by Lucas Siikala and Martin Rivera on his first score and completed the brace with helpers from Jake Shannon and Jack Clarkson.

Newsome sent his fourth shot of the game into the back of the net to send the UNCW bench into a frenzy before an Alumni Weekend crowd of 1,017 fans. It was the second time this season UNCW rallied past a two-goal deficit when it last overcame a 3-1 hole to tie then-No. 1 Wake Forest on the road in September.

The Seahawks outshot the Camels, 16-9, including a 13-5 advantage after halftime. UNCW also held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.

Goalkeepers Trey Smiley of UNCW and Max Leviton of Campbell each recorded six saves.

UNCW closes out non-conference action on Tuesday at Clemson at 7 p.m.
